Program Description:
The Clinical Driving Assessment is done in a therapy clinic with a specially-trained Occupational therapist. We assess 5 domains that make up a safe driver including:
• general physical function and the ability to operate a vehicle
• memory/attention
• vision (as required by WI DOT standards)
• general WI road knowledge
• reaction time
Typically, the test can take 90 mins on average but will depend on the clinic. We submit to insurance, so outside of copays or limited insurance coverage, there is typically no cost to the patient. To participate, we need a ‘service to Occupational thearpy’ order from a doctor (usually the primary care doctor) and we suggest putting in the comments section of the order ‘clinical driving assessment’ so that we are able to schedule to appointment correctly. To clarify, the Occupational therapist does not grant or revoke the driver’s license, we simply advise the referring provider on whether the participant is safe to drive. It is up to the referring provider to determine if he/she would like to revoke driving privileges for the participant.
Provides objective testing with cut off scores that indicate if someone is safe to drive and also allows us to recommend strategies, thearpy and car modifications to keep safe drivers driving longer.
