Program Description:
Street Outreach Program that provides individuals and families living on the streets of Kenosha who our outreach advocate come in contact with; a backpack, sleeping bag, bottled water, food, homeless ID card, community resources and referrals to organizations designated to assist them further to help aid people to safely leave the streets and into an emergency shelter. Walkin' In My Shoes do not provide emergency shelter, housing, rental assistance, utilities assistance, bus pass, token, gift cards or clothing to the general public. Programs and Services: - SURVIVAL BACKPACK Provides individuals and families; our outreach advocates come in contact with living on the streets of Kenosha. Our services include a backpack, sleeping bag, bottled water, food, homeless ID card, community resource and referrals to organization designated to assist them further to help aid people to safely leave the streets and into an emergency shelter. Walkin' In My Shoes does not provide emergency shelter. - IDA’S HOUSE Youth Program IDA’S HOUSE Youth Program IS NOT A SHELTER, OR RENT ASSISTANCE. It assists unaccomplished youth of all ages (who are in need of immediate care). Once we make the first point of contact hopefully to connect teens with emergency shelter and housing programs designated in our community to have a safe place to stay. The services we offer also help youth get back into high school, attend college, obtain employment, clothing, ID’s, birth certificates and other documents needed to obtain employment. - HEALTHY LIVIN' PREVENTIVE OUTREACH PROGRAM Encourages individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness and are living life on the street to understand the importance of taking better care of themselves by getting the simplest wellness care starting with an annual checkup. This program when funded, also provides assistance for people battling childhood obesity, adult and juvenile diabetes, high blood pressure with prescription medication (s) and over the counter medical needs such as multivitamins allergy and cold medicine, and cough drops. The program also provides individuals and children with allergies; medical emergency bracelets that are very crucial for people to have when being out in public. Transportation costs, co-payment, an exercise and nutrition planner. Plus, enroll in a local fitness center receives a free Fitbit bracelet (while supplies permit) also included in the plan. - IN THE HANDS OF HOPE (AFTERCARE OUTREACH PROGRAM) Our Aftercare Specialist meet one on one with incarcerated women and men inmates at the Kenosha County Detention Center who were identified homeless at the time of their incarceration. The services prepares each inmate with a discharge action plan to help people transitions back into mainstream society. A one-time courtesy care package of clothing and personal care items are provided upon request. Plus, assist inmates with their Permanency Plan Order and Child Support Order that better help address those orders once they are released to reunite with their children upon their release. - STEPPIN UP Grandparents Program Assist grandparents, and other relatives who are raising their grandchildren in their homes, without financial means to provide basic needs to help children with a way to live a good productive life and grow to do well in school. This program works one on one with grandparents who have school-age children with school uniforms, backpacks, school supplies, food, and referrals to community services. - BOUTIQUE FOR THE HOMELESS Taylor Gabbylill Boutique for The Homeless is geared towards people who are enrolled in our program who are in need of clothing, shoes, and accessories when they are donated. Our clothing boutique also provides residents of our community who are affected by natural disasters, rodent infestation and other unforeseen situations - AT THE DOOR Provides individuals and families enrolled in our program, who have moved beyond life on the streets with basic household items and furnishings. These items are donated to turn an empty space into a place they can call home. - SEED TO HARVEST COMMUNITY GARDEN (Temporary unavailable) For the past ten years, we have seen a rise in the number of children on average who are battling obesity, juvenile diabetes and other health allergies. We’ve seen firsthand in our homeless youth program; how young people need to be educated on how to grow their own food. Our community garden provides education and a space for youth, families, and community residents to learn how important all-natural grown foods are good for their bodies and how easy it is to grow these foods and where food comes from. While helping to save our environment by composting materials, seeds, and plants, plus we give them all the gardening materials needed at no cost to them. - CADEN'S KITCHEN COOKING CLASS (Temporary unavailable) Caden’ Kitchen is a cooking class program in conjunction with Our Seed to Harvest Community Garden. We teach cooking lessons and cultural cuisines using the finest fresh produce grown from our garden. The meals are a great way to serve a meal on the dinner table each night. While learning how to eliminate chemical process foods for their diet, combating hunger, social inequalities, and other health-related concerns. Each member receives a cookbook, apron, chef hat, kitchen utensils, recipes and a way to eat smart, healthy and happy too. - TRANQUILITY VETERANS GARDEN (Temporary unavailable) Provides a horticultural therapeutic and Botanic Garden space for all military active duty personnel, veterans, and their families. In collaboration with the Veterans Administration Medical Clinic, we help individuals with garden techniques, stretching exercises, yoga, herbal challenges for PTSD, alcohol and substance abuse recovery live a healthy lifestyle at no cost to them. This program provides referrals to counseling with professional behavior health providers, housing assisting for homeless veterans, along with art activities, daily outings such as fishing, bowling, basketball, and children family activities. - Bunker’s Coffeehouse for VETS (OUR HELPING HANDS) The Bunker Coffee House for VETS offer a “Safe Space” once a week (Thursday, 9am-1pm) to support our service men and women and provide continental breakfast, lunch, computer access to apply for VA benefits, state insurance, social security aid, and other community assistance. We do this to assist and serve those who have selflessly served our country honorably. The coffee house is the first of its kind program in Kenosha that offers a community program throughout the year, exclusively for Veterans, Active-Duty Personnel, and their families. Veterans who are experiencing homelessness also receive referrals to Kenosha VA office to assist in meeting their basic needs. SD, PP
